Eye Makeup and Dry Eye

For many patients, eye makeup is part of their everyday life. The cosmetics industry is one of the most extensive and successful markets in the world, offering countless products and formulations for every taste, desire, or concern.

While experimenting with different products and applications can satisfy every personal taste and need, it is important to consider how these products that are applied to the lids, lashes, and possibly the lid margins, can affect the health of the eyes. Waterproof formulations, heavy application, cosmetic trends, and certain ingredients (such as parabens or fragrance) can disrupt the ocular surface, gland function, and tear film, and should be avoided by dry eye patients.

In addition, these cosmetics usually require special makeup removers, often high in surfactants, for complete removal which can be especially harsh on the delicate eyelid skin and remove the oils in the lid margins, disrupting the tear film. Therefore, it is recommended for dry eye patients to use water-based cosmetics, avoid harmful or toxic ingredients, and use an eye makeup remover for dry eyes that is gentle and safe for the tear film.

Why Use an Eye Makeup Remover Formulated for Dry Eyes?

Daily eye makeup removal is essential to help maintain ocular health, but it is important to ensure that the products used to cleanse the lids and lashes are not contributing to the dry eye problem.
