The Importance of Daily Ocular Hygiene for Everyone

(I-MED Pharma)

Do your patients ever wake up with crusty eyelids and clumped up lashes? Do they suffer from irritation, dryness, discomfort, or grittiness in their eyes? Do they experience redness, inflamed eyelids, itchiness, or pain? If the answer is yes, then introducing an eyelid and eyelash care regimen should be considered.

When it comes to eye care, eyelids tend to be forgotten. The eyelids’ and eyelashes’ role are to trap debris, toxins, and other particles, and prevent these foreign bodies from getting onto the ocular surface. Here are 4 reasons why daily ocular hygiene is important.

  1. Dry Eye Disease

The most common cause of evaporative dry eye is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).  MGD occurs due to a blockage, or some other abnormality of the meibomian glands where they are unable to secrete enough oil into the tears. These canal-like glands are in the eyelids and they often get clogged, leading to inflammation. Adding a consistent eyelid and eyelash regimen to a patient’s dry eye routine can help avoid these glands becoming clogged. I-LID ’N LASH® is a gentle, water-based hygiene cleanser that is safe for patients to use daily to maintain their lid and lash health. I-LID ’N LASH® also improves the effectiveness of artificial tears and doubles as a make-up remover.

  1. It’s allergy season! – Welcome to itchy, irritated, and watery eyes!

The sun is finally out, but with the warmer weather arriving, so are seasonal allergies. Allergens can get stuck between the eyelashes and cause inflammation, leading to irritation and itchiness. Going through allergy season is inevitable, but there are a couple things that can help keep the eyes comfortable while enjoying the beginning of Summer. One of the best ways to manage allergy symptoms is by keeping the eyes well- lubricated, and the eyelids and eyelashes clean.

  1. Mites in our lashes – Myth or Reality?

Is there a build-up of itchy, sticky, yellowish discharge at the base of the eyelashes? This could be the result of an infestation of demodex mites. These tenacious and unwanted eight-legged visitors can reside in hair follicles and sebaceous glands in the lid margins. Tea tree oil (TTO), an essential oil derived from melaleuca alternifolia, is known to be one of the most effective solutions to fight these mites. I-LID ’N LASH® PRO and I-LID ’N LASH® PLUS is recommended as a combined program for patients requiring more intensive cleansing of the periorbital region.  This two-step process involves an in-clinic professional application using I-LID ’N LASH® PRO (containing 20% TTO), and daily at-home follow-up applications by the patient using I-LID ’N LASH® PLUS (containing 5% TTO). Once the Demodex mites are eliminated, keep the eyelids and eyelashes clean with daily applications of I-LID ’N LASH® wipes to steer clear of any future infestation.

  1. Eyelash Extensions

With the gain in popularity of eyelash extensions, getting a visit from a patient who wears them is not uncommon. Using any foreign substances near the eyes can cause allergic reactions, inflammation, styes, and infections such as bacterial conjunctivitis. A daily cleansing of the eyelash extensions, using a water-based cleanser, should be done to avoid any bacterial growth and to keep the lashes looking beautiful. 1

As with daily dental hygiene, eyelid hygiene should be incorporated everyday, in the morning and at night. This will help break the dry eye cycle and keep inflammation at bay, as well as reduce the chances of developing demodex, blepharitis or MGD.

As we all know, incorporating new daily habits can be a real challenge, but in the long run, you will SEE THE DIFFERENCE!
