Don’t Take Your Eyes for Granted
The importance of regular eye exams has been recognized for many years. You may have problems even if you are not experiencing symptoms such as pain, itching, inflammation, blurriness, etc. Should these issues go undetected, and therefore untreated, they can often lead to more serious and/or irreversible conditions.
Visiting an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist on a regular basis is your best course of action to effectively monitor and maintain your vision and ocular health. When an eye exam is initiated only when obvious symptoms are evident, you are exposed to unnecessary risks.
If you do experience the following signs and symptoms, a more serious problem may have developed and a need for more frequent follow up appointments may be necessary.
- Discomfort & pain
- Itching & blurriness
- Excessive tearing
- Dry eyes
- Eye fatigue
- Foreign body sensation
- Sensitivity to light
The CAO Policy Position on the guidelines for frequency of eye examinations for patients at low risk is as follows:
|Infants and Toddlers (Birth to 24 months)||Infants and toddlers should undergo their first eye examination between the ages of 6 and 9 months|
|Preschool Children (2 to 5 years)||Preschool children should undergo at least one eye examination between the ages of 2 and 5 years|
|School Age Children (6 to 19 years)||School children aged 6 to 19 years should undergo an eye examination annually|
|Adults (20 to 39 years)||Adults aged 20 to 39 years should undergo an eye examination every 2 to 3 years.|
|Adults (40 to 64 years)||Adults aged 40 to 64 years should undergo an eye examination every 2 years.|
|Adults (65 years or older)||Adults aged 65 years or older should undergo an eye examination annually|
